Picking up the pieces

Some things you may have missed:

As predicted, Peter Mandelson is no longer UK ambassador to the US.  Keir Starmer said he was unaware of the details of Mandelson's friendship with Jeffrey Epstein when he appointed him.  Mandelson is gay, raising more questions about the hospitality on Epstein Island.

Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup, but don't worry -- little Marco is on it:

So is Lisa Simpson:

For Brazilians, on the other hand, carnival came early:

Right-wing members of the European Union Parliament tried to hold a minute of silence for Charlie Kirk and were overruled by President Roberta Metsola.  They will probably try again next month.

Despite describing it as "accurate and in accordance with all NSA policy, directives and guidance," Tulsi Gabbard ordered the report on the Venezuela drone strike removed from all files.  Presumably it contradicted lies told by Trump and Hegseth.

In response to the killing of Iryna Zarutska, Sean Duffy has decided to punish everyone in Charlotte who uses public transportation by cutting off funds to the city's mass transit system.  Mass transit is woke -- real Americans drive cars.

The Secret Service has been infiltrated by Hamas.  So says Laura Loomer, who is certain that's why protesters were allowed to get within earshot at Joe's Restaurant.  Yet Trump and his cabal left unharmed, so the SS did its job, which is not the suppression of free speech.

Until Gaza has been cleared of residents and other detritus, Trump appears to be warming up by "developing" a stretch of California beachfront that belongs to Camp Pendleton.  Described as land the Marine Corps "rarely uses," it is listed on their website as "beaches, bluffs, canyons, mesas, mountains and Southern California's only free-flowing river," home to "more than 1,000 species of plants, fish and animals."  The Navy Secretary has inspected the place for "initial conversations about possible commercial leasing opportunities."  The proceeds would theoretically fund the "Golden Dome" boondoggle, a/k/a "Star Wars 2.0."  America for sale or rent.

God is under siege, according to Eric Trump.  When a racist, misogynistic, Second Amendment-supporting Christonazi can be gunned down in broad daylight, no one is safe.  Eric promises to donate a portion of the royalties from his "book" to Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk's personal grift, making him the first sleazebag to cash in on the murder.  He does not specify the portion, but probably as much as that children's cancer charity got from his golf tournament.

If you can't beat 'em, try to influence 'em:  Mike Bloomberg spent $8 million trying to prevent Zohran Mamdani from becoming mayor of New York but has now met with him personally to discuss transportation issues and offer advice on staffing City Hall.  Which doesn't mean the Z-man has to take it.

Stephen King decided to apologize for Xweeting that Charlie Kirk "advocated stoning gays to death."  He was right to do so, because Kirk was merely quoting Leviticus with approval.  Huge difference.

Like the Russians targeting Ukrainian libraries and museums, like the Nazis burning priceless Torahs and other texts, Israel threatened to destroy the French Biblical and Archeological School's Gaza storehouse, which houses artefacts from five important sites including the St. Hilarion monastery, a UNESCO world heritage site.  It's not enough to exterminate people, their culture must also be erased.  The storehouse was hastily emptied while under attack, its treasures dispersed.

In other news of the old, a 3,500-year-old cuneiform shopping list has been discovered in Eski Alalah, Turkey, outlining a number of furniture purchases.  In Akkadian.

Britain lacks the free speech protection of the First Amendment and people have been arrested for belonging to a "terrorist" group or even expressing support for it.  So it's important that the mysterious street artist known as Banksy is around to stir the pot.  After 900 people were arrested last Saturday in Parliament Square for protesting the banning of the advocacy group Palestine Action, Banksy produced this for the Royal Courts of Justice:

The depiction of a judge assaulting with a gavel a man holding a blank sign was hastily covered up and later washed from the wall.  London Museum is planning a show of Banksy's work next year, but now that he is technically a terrorist, too -- who knows?
